The human body needs elements from the earth: organic food (that's nutrient rich and non-gmo), clean and energized water, natural full spectrum sunlight, oxygen from fresh air and YES pulsed magnetic fields (PEMF). PEMF is a required and necessary element found on planet earth and necessary for the human body to survive (as we will see on the next page).
Our journey together will be to comprehend and study the Earth's natural pulsed electromagnetic (PEMF) energies and try to find a device that best matches what is found in nature.

"Comprehend and Copy Nature" Victor Schauberger
Victor Schauberger (know as "The Water Wizard") was a great Austrian scientist, inventor and water researcher. He practiced and lived by the motto, "Comprehend and Copy Nature".
He was often quoted as saying "Nature is My Teacher".
I want to briefly mention Victor Schauberger because I truly believe his approach to understanding the best water Nature provides and his inventions of machines that duplicated nature's process of making water can help us use a similar approach to understanding the best PEMF energies and which device(s) duplicate nature.
Schauberger and one of his predecessors, Vincent carefully studied the parameters of Nature's best spring waters, parameters like temperature, pH, conductivity, surface tension, dissolved solids, etc, and carefully invented machines that replicated nature. Modern day tap water is loaded with harmful chemicals and in no way is similar to nature's water.
He also observed how water moved, that it was sensitive to sunlight, had different cycles and he even believed water in nature had a living presence.
Before applying this reasoning to PEMF, let s go through elements you are perhaps more familiar with (i.e. food, water and air) to illustrate to you how intuitive and logical this reasoning is.
The Four Elements of Health (Earth/Food - Water/H20 - Fire/Sunlight - Air/Oxygen).
Starting with food, there is a lot of confusion as to which foods to eat and which diet is best. Personally, I am a certified nutritionist and I am familiar with most of the popular diets.
What's interesting to me is that even diets that seem diametrically opposite (like the Atkins diet and Vegetarian diets) share a lot in common (namely, what to avoid). There is no diet I am aware of that recommends fast food, white bread, soda pops, sugar, trans fats, processed foods, canned foods, processed salt, etc, etc.
My point is that whether you eat meat or not, these major diets DO stick with nature. Personally I am a raw food vegan, but I am not sure this is the best diet for everyone. What I am sure of is that if you eat whole foods from nature (organic and non-gmo), fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and grass fed meats and unprocessed dairy you can thrive. Again truth is simple: Stick with Nature.
When it comes to water, we should drink water that is purified with just the right amount of minerals. Like the best springs in nature OR a water processor that duplicates nature.
We also need clean air and plenty of oxygen. Indoor air was shown in one EPA study to be 30 times more polluted than downtown L.A. So try to get a good air purifier and get outside in the fresh country, mountain or ocean air as much as possible.
And perhaps not as critical, but still important is natural full spectrum light. We need an average of 30 minutes of full spectrum light a day otherwise we get what it known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D).
There is much more to say about food, water, air and full spectrum light, but I want to keep it simple. We need these elements and the form we need is what is found in nature.
Fast foods, synthetic vitamins, drugs, tap water, soft drinks, forced air heat, air conditioned air and fluorescent lights are NOT natural and actually harmful to our health.
There is ONE MORE element that was not known to be essential, and that FIFTH Element is Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF), which is the focus of this review site.
My premise is that we should seek a PEMF device that best duplicates nature, just like we should seek natural foods, water, air and full spectrum light.
PEMF - The Fifth Element (Part 1) Most people know we need food (earth), water (water) and oxygen (air) to survive. And many people also know they need full spectrum sunlight (fire) or you get what is referred to as SAD (seasonal affective disorder). That makes FOUR critical elements, EARTH/FOOD, WATER, FIRE/SUNLIGHT and AIR/OXYGEN.
But most people DON'T know there is a fifth element also vital and necessary for human life. That element is... PEMF!!!
PEMF - Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields, is the fifth element needed for human health and well-being. And just as all the elements come from the Aether/Ether, so does all matter arise out of pulsed electromagnetic energy PEMF.
PEMF - The Fifth Element (Part 2)
In Yuri Gagarin's historic flight into space, he returned in near critical condition after only one hour and forty-eight minutes in space. Clearly there was some vital element missing in space that we receive on earth. Well Yuri had plenty of food, he had water, and also oxygen and since the flight was less than 2 hours he really only needed oxygen. So what's missing? Well you may say gravity and yes you would be correct, but we can survive in near weightless environments here on earth (in water for example) for just a couple hours. The critical missing element is PEMF - Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields.
Since that first flight, pulsed magnetic devices have been used in every space suit and space station with the notable inclusion in the MIR space station.
Further studies have been done on earth (zero field studies) with both laboratory animals and human subjects. What was found is that just in a matter of hours of NO exposure to healthy PEMF's, cell metabolism begins to break down causing bone loss, muscle weakness, depressed metabolism, disorientation and depression.
Conclusion - Research has conclusively proven the fifth element PEMF is a necessary and required element of health just as is food, water, and oxygen and to some extent sunlight.
PEMF - The Fifth Element (Part 3)
PEMF's are like a spark plug or catalyst for energy production in the cell. Just like a car needs oxygen, fuel and an ignition (spark plug), so does the human cell need fuel (glucose), oxygen and a "spark plug" or ignition. This ignition is PEMF or pulsed magnetic energy from both the earth and movement/exercise on the earth.
We can also think of PEMF as a battery recharger for the human cell. We now know that the voltage of a healthy cell is about 70-110 millivolts and when we get sick that voltage drops below 50 millivolts or less and cancer cells are 30 millivolts or less. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) act like a catalyst and battery recharger for the human cells and these PEMF's are critical for human metabolism.
PEMF's also improve microcirculation, oxygenation (up to a 200% increase), help in nerve regeneration, pain management and many other health promoting benefits. There are over 2000 clinical studies and over 10,000 research papers validating the therapeutic benefits of PEMFs.

All energy is electromagnetic in nature, and nothing happens in the body without an electromagnetic exchange between cells. We are all familiar with the electrocardiogram (EKG) and electroencephalograph (EEG) tests, which measure the electromagnetic activity of the heart and brain, respectively. When electromagnetic activity ceases, life ceases. Electromagnetic energy controls our chemistry. Disruption of this energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, and if our cells are not healthy, our body is not healthy, in whole or in part. The following is an introduction to magnetic fields, PEMFs, and their therapeutic actions in the body.
What is an electromagnetic field? What are PEMFs?
If you have ever held two magnets in your hands, tried to force them together, and felt a resistance between them, then you have experienced a magnetic field. The earth has his own magnetic field , produced by fluxes in the molten metal in the core of the planet. The presence of this field is what causes
a compass to rotate so that the ‘north pole’ of the compass points roughly north. A changing magnetic field (such as a magnetic field moving through a coil) generates an electric field (which would drive a current in the coil). This forms the basis for many electrical generators and motors. Similar to the way that a changing magnetic field can generate an electric field, a changing electric field generates a magnetic field. This is a natural activity of the universe. An electromagnetic field is a physical field produced by moving electrical charges. It affects the behavior of any other charged objects in the vicinity of the field.
PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields, which are widely used these days to improve circulation and cell metabolism. The body can become accustomed to non-moving or static field which are generally unable to deeply penetrate the body. A pulsed electromagnetic field, however, is quite dynamic, is able to penetrate all the way through the body, and creates a cascade of effects within the body.
It is important to distinguish between the electromagnetic fields we use for therapeutic purposes, and other man-made electromagnetic fields from power lines, microwave ovens, cell phones, etc., which can cause damage to our bodies. The PEMF devices we recommend all produce safe, natural electromagnetic fields which are of lower frequency, and are complementary to the chemistry and functions of the body.
How can electromagnetic fields have an effect on my body?
As we now understand, an electromagnetic field affects the behavior of anything with charge in the vicinity of the field. Our bodies are electric – every heartbeat generates electromagnetic waves throughout the blood vessels of the body, stimulating tissues at a cellular level. External magnetic fields and the normal electric and electromagnetic fields produced by the body interact. So, a magnetic field passing through our whole body will have an electromagnetic effect on each of our 70 trillion cells. As a result, magnetic fields act in basic and fundamental ways on molecules and tissues. They affect the most basic functions of all cells—human, animal, and plant included.
What are some basic cell functions, and how do magnetic fields facilitate them?
Some of the basic actions of a cell are to generate energy to eliminate waste, to repair and regenerate itself, and perform its predetermined functions based on the cell’s type and location in the body. Magnetic fields cause or increase motion of ions and electrolytes in the tissues and fluids of the body. It’s both easy and quick to move an ion or electrolyte in a living organism using magnetic fields. This movement stimulates a vast array of chemical and electric actions in the tissues of the body, helping them to rebalance or heal themselves where necessary.
All cells need energy to function. Cellular energy requires ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and is fundamental to all cell and body functions and is necessary to sustain life itself. ATP regulates cell metabolism by transporting chemical energy within our cells. Low ATP levels cause our cells to be sick, and decreases their ability to heal, regenerate, or function properly. Through the increased motion of ions and electrolytes, magnetic fields help cells increase their energy (or “charge”) by up to 500%.
Why do I need treatment at a cellular level?
Magnetic fields also affect the charge of the cell membrane, which allows membrane channels to open up. These channels are like the doors and windows of a house. By opening cell channels, nutrients are better able to enter the cell, and waste is more easily eliminated from the cell. This helps to rebalance and restore optimum cell function. If you restore enough cells, they will all work more efficiently. Cells of the same type come together to make tissues, and those tissues come together to make organs. So, by restoring or maintaining cellular function, you will, in turn, restore or maintain organ function, allowing the entire body to function better. We all know that the body ages over time. Maintaining the function of every individual cell at an optimal level every day is an important part of slowing aging.
Can PEMF therapy protect me from future illnesses?
Cellular “injury”, the state of a cell when it is not healthy, leads to disease conditions. Magnetic field protect against cell injury by improving circulation, repair processes, and energy, and increasing special stress proteins in the cells. These proteins are used to prevent cell breakdown and wear and tear, as well as help speed recovery from injury. Magnetic fields balance cells, tissues and bodily functions at very fundamental levels, even before damage and problems become obvious to you.
I thought magnetic fields were bad for me.
There are distinct differences in the effects of devices at various frequency ranges, from extremely low frequencies (ELFs), to very low frequencies (VLFs), to microwave level frequencies, radio frequencies, infrared and ultraviolet frequencies, and more. Most magnetic field exposure risk comes from power lines and cell phones, because of their particular exposure times or field strengths and frequencies. These frequencies and intensities, known as ‘electro-smog’, can induce heat in the tissues of the body and modify genes, and therefore can damage cells. Most PEMF devices we recommend produce frequencies in the ELF to VLF range, since they do not induce heating actions. They in fact form a great defense mechanism against magnetic field deficiency caused by electro-smog. Our device have carefully selected frequencies which are most natural and balancing to the body. Our recommended treatment have a very safe track record – even the much higher intensity and frequency diagnostic MRI machines have been found to be safe to the people that operate them daily, as long as the safety directions are followed.
Can I overdose on a magnetic field?
Low frequency, low intensity magnetic fields have minimal effect on healthy cells. In healthy cells, these magnetic fields seem to be ignored. A cell cannot make more energy than it is capable of. In other words, it cannot be “overcharged” with PEMFs. Only unhealthy or unbalanced cells need and use the extra energy from therapeutic PEMFs to get better.
How quickly will my illness or health issue improve?
Minor imbalances in individual cells can be rebalanced very easily before they become an obvious problem. Regrettably, many people wait until they have a significant health issue before they seek treatment with a PEMF system or get a magnetic system for their own home use. By this time, some problems have become too deep-seated to reverse, and only symptom control remains possible. It is important to say that PEMFs are not expected to cure disease. Their role is to stimulate the various functions of the body so that the body can better support and heal itself. Understanding the extent of a health problem will help the individual to have realistic expectations of the time required to produce expected or desired results. If the problem took a long time to get to where it is now, PEMFs may take a long time to give the greatest benefit – and may never produce hoped-for results if the damage is too great. That doesn’t mean they won’t work, and it doesn’t mean you won’t get significant health benefits. We need to respect the body’s healing timelines and processes, and work positively with them. When treatment is begun, the order of healing will follow the body’s own wisdom of what tissue and symptoms will be cleared first, second, etc. Patience and acceptance of this natural order will aid in the healing process.
Will magnetic fields replace my medication?
While PEMFs will not cure diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, or cancer, they still can make a huge improvement in overall function and symptom relief, and can be used alongside other treatments, including medication, for even better results. In many cases, PEMFs can be used to replace or reduce pain medications and other anti-inflammatories, but they should not be depended on as the primary treatment without discussion with an appropriate health care professional. They can become a primary treatment once a proper diagnosis and treatment plan are developed and the need for medication is reduced or eliminated.
Which system is the best?
You wouldn’t walk into a pharmacy and ask for the best medication to make you healthy without first discussing what problems you are trying to treat—the same is true of PEMF systems. Some health problems require higher intensity fields to get the best benefit. Some require a wider range of frequencies. Sometimes a person’s sensitivity determines which system is best for them. Sometimes affordability is the primary concern. Only when we understand what health issues are of greatest concern to an individual can we begin to determine how many sessions are most likely need it to achieve the desired results. Our experience is that most PEMF treatment will provide at least some benefit, even if not the optimal system.
How often should I do treatments? Daily, or only as problems arise?
Magnetic fields selected for treatment simultaneously provide health maintenance, not just treatment. PEMFs used daily would be an important part of any prevention or health maintenance program, in addition to any treatment program. Magnetic therapies are usually complementary to other therapies, and they usually enhance each other’s benefits.
What can I do to improve the effects of PEMFs in my body?
Since most of the effects of magnetic fields happen because of how they act on ions, especially calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium, these ions and electrolytes need to be at the right levels in the body. It is difficult to heal depleted tissues without sound nutrition. Supplements may also be quite helpful for magnetic therapy to be most effective. We usually recommends magnesium supplementation and adequate amounts of daily water. Additionally, some individuals (particularly women) need extra melatonin to optimize health while using PEMFs.
What are some of the basic beneficial actions PEMFs will have in my body?
One of the most basic functions magnetic fields have in the body is to increase circulation. When a cell (such as a red blood cell) is injured or ill, it does not hold its ideal charge. This causes red cells to “stick” together, making circulation slow. When a magnetic field passes through the red cell, the membrane becomes properly charged, allowing the cell to repel itself and keep itself separate from other red cells, thereby increasing circulation. In addition, PEMFs increase various chemicals in the blood vessel walls that cause the blood vessels to dilate, improving the amount of blood flowing through the vessels and therefore increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to the tissues.
Poor circulation makes tissues unhealthy and prone to disease and breakdown. Improved circulation helps tissues get the nutrition and oxygen they need, while expelling the waste they produce. Good circulation helps with tissue healing and regeneration. The result of improved circulation is the reduction of swelling and the removal of bruising.
Enhanced Muscle Function
Muscle energy, needed for muscles to work, is developed through a process called Myosin Phosphorylation. Myosin is muscle, and phosphorylation is energy (ATP) production. Optimal energy allows muscles to work harder and longer, and recover more quickly from their work. Muscles that are contracted or in spasm are better able to relax, decreasing tension and reducing the pain caused by spasm.
Inflammation is a cascade of physiologic processes initiated by the body to repair cellular damage in tissues by increasing the blood flow to the damaged area and increasing the number of good inflammatory cells. The process of inflammation is generated and supported by the interaction of a number of immune cell types, with other cell types (like T cells) playing a regulatory role in the cascade effect. Inflammation is a necessary and beneficial process, but it often persists longer than necessary, resulting in chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is frequently a cause of chronic pain. PEMFs have been found to reduce chronic, damaging inflammation. Inflammation can be initiated by many causes, and knowing the nature of the cause is important in designing therapeutic approaches.
T cells are a major regulator of the inflammatory cascade. In bacterial infections, early infiltration of the affected tissues by white blood cells is followed by the arrival of T cells, which kill bacteria. In this circumstance, eliminating of T cells can delay or stop healing. Conversely, in trauma-induced injury, T cells are less important to the healing process, and may be harmful if present for too long. In this case, elimination of T cells can minimize the unwanted effects of inflammation, accelerate healing, and reduce the risk of chronic inflammatory diseases. In chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, or tendinitis, T cells support the persistence of the disease state, and removing them would be favorable.
Research shows us that PEMFs can induce the appropriate death of aged, chronic T lymphocytes, by actions on T cell membranes and key enzymes in cells. For example, PEMFs affect ion flow through specific cell membrane channels (like those for sodium, potassium, and calcium), which positively affect these enzymes.
Stress is part of being human. Normal stress, called eustress, is necessary for survival. Too much stress is very harmful to the body, and accelerates aging. Stress is responsible for at least 65% of our illnesses, so stress reduction is necessary for all of us. Stress-reducing activities performed only now and then will allow too much stress-related damage to accumulate over time. Therefore, stress reduction must be a daily activity. Magnetic fields have many stress-reducing effects. Daily use of PEMFs help to wash away the negative effect natural stresses have on our bodies.
Magnetic fields pass through the body – even the bones – as if the body wasn’t even there. PEMFs work to repair bones, whether they are damaged by surgery, injury, or disease, and have been found to improve bone regeneration such as occurs with osteoporosis and osteopenia, among other bone destroying conditions.
Just as a fire cannot burn without oxygen, our cells cannot produce heat and energy without oxygen. Our lungs extract oxygen from the air we breathe. It passes into our blood and is carried by arteries away from the heart and delivered to the rest of the body, including all the organs. PEMFs help with the process of extracting oxygen out of the air we breathe and help it to be transported into the circulation. The absorbed oxygen is then transported through the body to all the cells, where it is absorbed into the individual cells. In the cells, enzymes and other basic cell energy production processes use the oxygen for cell metabolism, the energy necessary to function properly. The metabolism of an organism determines which substances it will find nutritious and which it will find harmful. Proper blood-oxygen levels at the cell level (not just in the blood) allow this process to continue quickly and efficiently. After the oxygen exchange takes place, veins carry deoxygenated blood and metabolic waste products away from those same cells and back to the heart for recycling again.
The purpose of this document is to provide a basic understanding of how magnetic fields, especially PEMFs, work in the body. In addition to these basic balancing actions, magnetic fields also help with many other functions and conditions, and new ones are discovered regularly.

Due to the non-constant magnetic field of the Earth, currents are induced in a human body in motion. Up to 4 micro-amperes per square meter occur with exercises such as bending or rotation of the arm and up to 15 micro-amperes per square meter when traveling at 100 km/hr (about 62mph). These induced currents change at a rate between 0Hz and 10Hz. These induced currents are extremely important to life and human functioning. We routinely see that when people stop moving around, they lost muscle mass, vitality, and function. This gives new meaning to the phrase, "If you dont use it, you lose it."
Space program managers and astronauts now understand that being out in space causes more issues with body functioning than just the loss of gravity. Research where the earth's magnetic fields are suppressed is showing that big changes happen without the background field in which we have developed. Should there ever be a pole reversal, there would be a significant effect on biology – it would not be pleasant, but not irreversible either. There have been pole reversals in the Earth's past. Examination of the polarization of rocks and sediments in the Earth's sea floor has shown these events
As we speak with people who purchase magnetic field systems, we are frequently asked about a general healing timeline for the recovery process—“When will I feel better?” and sometimes “Why don’t I feel better yet?”
These questions are related, and answering them requires somewhat of an understanding of how PEMF therapies work when applied to specific health circumstances. The overall state of the individual’s body must also be taken into account.
Some health problems require higher field intensities. Some respond better to lower intensities. Some problems require a broad range of frequencies, while others do better with a minimal number of frequencies, or a single frequency. Device selection, then, is exceptionally important to achieving the best results from your system. That being said, every magnetic system will produce benefit to an extent. The right magnetic system for individual circumstances though, will tend to produce results more quickly. Often, people make purchasing decisions based on affordability, so the right PEMF system may not be available to them. In this case, it will likely take longer for benefit to be achieved. Patience will be required in these circumstances.
Everybody is different and every body is different. Many people experience tremendous results within the first week or two of using their system. For some people, results come more slowly, and we can react to that by fine-tuning the treatment protocol. The body takes time to heal once it is given the appropriate signal or stimulus. A fracture, for example, will take 8 to 12 weeks to heal to a point where the bone can be used. This does not mean the healing process is complete, but just that the body part is usable once again. Magnetic therapies can speed the healing rate, but they cannot work miracles. Illness is rarely, if ever, an instantaneous happening—the same is true of healing. We did not get to our current health state overnight, and we are unlikely to heal overnight.
PEMFs do not drug the body into being painless or euphoric. We like to call that “numbing and dumbing.” Sometimes during the therapy process, drugs are important. But one of the goals of PEMF therapies is to be able to reduce the use of drugs if possible, and accomplish pain relief and improved function without changing the chemistry of the body.
PEMFs work deep in the tissues to stimulate natural healing processes that have gotten ‘stuck.’ It is the healing of tissues that creates the reduction in pain and improvement in function and overall health. This is ultimately the best option – it is sustainable and unlikely to regress. Additionally, during the healing process, the overwhelming majority of people find benefits unrelated to their initial health problem: sleep, mood, vitality, gut function, etc. often improve before the original problem has healed enough to become noticeably better.
Having proper expectations is important in the use of PEMF therapies. If you are depressed or anxious, for example, small health improvements may seem inadequate. We experience this most frequently with the elderly, who tend to have many health issues and therefore may not appreciate small benefits as the system provides them. To set realistic expectations, we must first understand the nature of the problem, the depth of the damage or dysfunction, the types of tissues involved and their respective regeneration potential, and the age of the patient. A 20-year-old will heal more quickly than an 80-year-old. The bodies of the young have more vitality, and their genetics support faster repair and recovery. Acute injuries heal much more quickly than chronic issues.
Expectations must be set within the limits of technology and the regenerative capabilities of the tissues themselves. Miraculous things rarely happen quickly; PEMFs are not a magic bullet. They are, however, generally a better solution than exposing the body to surgical procedures or potentially toxic medications. Often, individuals seek PEMF therapies after having already tried and failed with surgeries or medications. This can become a process like putting Humpty Dumpty back together again – possible, but a long road. It almost always takes time for permanent, dependable healing to happen. In some cases, the best thing PEMFs can do is help you maintain control of your health problem. In this case, their benefit would be similar to that of medications, physical therapy, etc., but PEMFs are natural, non-toxic, and can be done in the comfort of your own home.
The body is constantly regenerating itself – we are completely new bodies about every seven years. Various tissues have various repair and regeneration cycles. The cornea of the eye, for example, regenerates every 24 hours. Intestinal cells can repair within 72 hours. Skin and muscle cells may repair in 2 to 3 weeks. Bone can take up to 7 years to fully repair. Some tissues do not repair well, if they repair at al. These tissues (ligaments, tendons, nerves, spinal discs, and brain cells) generally don’t have a great blood supply in addition to a low regenerative capacity. Many of the problems PEMFs are used to address involve musculoskeletal tissues, and therefore can be stubborn to treat. We cannot push the tissue to regenerate beyond its optimal capacity.
Acknowledging the Level of Tissue Damage
True acknowledgement of the damage present in your body is a critical piece to solving the healing timeline puzzle. Gauging a specific tissue’s degree of involvement in the given health concern is important in understanding the amount of time it will take that tissue to heal. Problems in the body have degrees of involvement and different tissues are involved in any given injury. The degree of involvement can be considered in terms of layers or levels: the energetic level, the physiologic level, the pathophysiological level, and the pathologic level.
Most health problems have at least the energetic and the physiologic levels involved. When there is any damage to tissue or cell injury, there will almost always be some degree of pathologic involvement. When there is pathology, most of the time the tissue or cells are irreversibly damaged; the goal of treatment would be to repair and regenerate as much of the tissue surrounding the area of irreversible damage as possible. The body does most of the repair and regeneration using its own innate programs. PEMF therapies help the body to repair and regenerate better and can accelerate the process, often by as much as twofold.
To better understand how this works, we will use a common cold as an example. When a cold is first beginning, many people feel a vague sense of disease or discomfort, without any specific sense of where or what the problem is. This is the energetic level. Once a cold begins to produce a sore throat, slight temperature, or runny nose, the infection has moved to the physiologic level, that is, the body is now reacting to the affront. If the infection is allowed to progress to a greater extent in the body, it may produce bronchitis, rhinitis, pneumonia, etc. This is the pathophysiologic level, and this level is where most chronic problems are stuck. If the infection continues to progress, there may be more significant cellular damage, possibly leading to tissue and organ failure. This is considered the pathologic level. Recovery from this level is much more challenging.
Responses to Treatment at Each Level
Treatments directed at problems in the energetic level produce much more dramatic and rapid results. For physiologic-level problems, treatments are more likely to produce noticeable responses after several days. Once there is some level of pathology (such as in the pathophysiologic level, like most chronic issues) the effects of treatments usually take longer to become noticeable—sometimes up to a few weeks. Once a health issue has reached the pathologic level, treatment outcomes are unpredictable. Results may take months to years, if they ever come. True and complete organ death is unlikely to be reversible with magnetic fields. We call this the “Lazarus effect” and it is very unlikely.
Once you know the probable level of damage within the body, it is easier to predict how long it may take for therapies to produce noticeable results. Treatments may be directed at a particular problem of interest, but improvement is sometimes seen in other places, based on the involved layers of tissue. The level and extent of the problem seems to be more important than the strength of the magnetic field, or the frequencies used, or the treatment times. Optimizing these variables should shorten the process.
The body has its own wisdom, and will respond to treatment in the layers and levels that make the most sense. We must respect these layers of healing and work positively with them. Patience and acceptance of this natural order will only aid in the healing process.
For tissues that do not have the capacity for regeneration, PEMFs are valuable in reducing pain, reducing swelling, improving circulation, and stimulating whatever regeneration may be possible.
Adequate Amount of Use
Most of us are busy, and finding an adequate amount of time to apply treatments can be difficult. However, time spent with the system translates into results. The amount of time needed will depend on the levels of dysfunction, tissue type, and type of PEMF system used. Generally speaking, higher intensity magnetic fields will produce faster results. That being said, higher intensity magnetic field systems tend to be more expensive than their lower-intensity counterparts. If a lower-intensity unit is what is affordable, then the amount of time spent on that unit may have to increase. Most people end up spending between 1 and 3 hours on their system throughout the day. Our most common recommendation in terms of treatment times is to use your system for 30 minutes at a time, 3 times per day. When time is available, you may see better results doing treatments for an hour at a time. No matter what, at least one treatment session should be done daily. One of the most important aspects of treatment with PEMFs is consistent daily use.
You can’t build a house without bricks and mortar.” Wounds will not heal without proper nutritional support. In fact, wound healing often stalls or breaks down and becomes complicated because the nutritional state of the body is inadequate. Doctors often run into trouble doing emergency surgery because the condition of the body is not healthy enough to handle the stress of the surgery, and won’t support adequate recovery afterwards.
For PEMF therapies to work best, then, individuals should be on decent diets and use a reasonable number of supplements. At the very least, most of us should be taking adequate levels of vitamin D3, omega-3 fatty acids, and a broad spectrum multivitamin. Many people using PEMF therapies will need extra magnesium. Some individuals will need to supplement their melatonin as well. PEMFs will also work better when the body is adequately hydrated; it is recommended that individuals drink half their body weight in ounces. (A 160-pound person should drink 80 ounces of water daily.)
PEMF therapy, as we have said, will not produce a ‘Lazarus effect.’ There are some health problems that cannot be corrected with PEMF therapy alone. One common example is with bone-on-bone arthritis in the knee or hip. In this circumstance, the damage is so extensive and so many tissues are involved that a joint replacement is often inevitable. Even in this situation, however, PEMF therapies can make a huge difference one way or another. If the magnetic therapy is not controlling the pain of the condition, it can assist the tissues to be as healthy as possible prior to having the joint replacement. After the surgery, the recovery time is expected to be shorter with the help of magnetic field therapy, and with a decreased risk of complications. In addition, some research and feedback from patients indicates that the prosthesis integrates better with the bone, making the new joint feel stronger. This osteointegration may also decrease the likelihood for future breakdown.
Effects on Medication
Some medications are very challenging to the body’s energy systems. For example, antidepressants, neuroleptics, and sedatives may change the way the body perceives pain signals, thereby blunting some of the pain-reduction benefits of PEMF therapy. We would never suggest that someone stop taking or reduce the dosage of their medication without a medical consultation. We raise the point only to inform you that occasionally, pain reduction is not as successful as we hope because of the medication effects. This is not to say that the other benefits of PEMFs in healing and regeneration will be lost – they will not. This only relates to the sensation or perception of pain. On the other hand, it is not uncommon that the same medications may be improved in their results when combined with PEMF therapy. Medication and nutrients tend to be better absorbed in the body when PEMFs are used. It is occasionally possible for people to reduce their medication once PEMFs have been used regularly for a while. Again, this should only be done with medical guidance.
Toxicity and Sensitivity
Infrequently, we experience individuals who are extraordinarily sensitive to magnetic fields, and experience increased discomfort or other unpleasant symptoms. In these cases, PEMF therapy must be used “low and slow,” meaning with a low intensity, and short treatment times. In these cases, benefits may be more difficult to achieve because the appropriate and necessary intensities are not possible. Still, results can be dramatic. Most of these individuals need to be on a significant supplement and nutrition program to achieve the best results.
PEMFs can open cells and cell membranes to the point of unloading toxins stored in the tissues of the body. This type of response is, in the long-run, a desirable action. However, it may be unpleasant while it is going on. The length of the detoxification will vary from patient to patient. Rarely will PEMF therapy have to be stopped. Those individuals with multiple chemical sensitivities may find magnetic field therapy intolerable until such time as the major detoxification can be achieved.
Research in the pain management program at Hopkins found that some individuals with chronic pain have personality traits that result in very poor treatment outcomes. These individuals often experience negative reactions even to placebo magnetic fields. When these patients are followed over time, some complain that their problems have been made worse by the (placebo) treatments. In these situations, it is not possible to please, and therefore PEMF therapy is not an appropriate treatment modality. Psychological counseling would be a necessary part of a pain management program.
